Context: I listened to most of this in one mammoth session, whilst I was doing some gardening in some much needed winter sun (I was also so ‘into’ the story I stayed outside for hours just so i could finish the box set!)

THE REVIEW

What I thought: I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect with this new series from BF. I do like a Zygon and I think the cover is pretty awesome (plus the inclusion of the second doctor intrigued me) made this pretty much a must listen for me. I had few expectations, I didn’t really know what the stories were about so I was surprised by the variety of the stories here. The first a Victorian ghost story, the second a truly horrifying tale of power and abuse and then the final story basically 1960’s James Bond and the second doctor! It’s an intriguing set of stories, stand alone but connected. The sheer brutality of the second story is rather jarring perhaps at times but it is really good, the performances are brilliant. Zygons are super creepy in the first two stories and the excitement and jeopardy ramps up in the final tale. Its a good start, I can see how some folks wouldn’t really like this but I was sold, I am very much looking forward to see where this goes

Rating: 4 out of 5 Daleks – very solid, excellent in parts, performances very strong and the Zygons are used really well, its great to have a boxset that enables a long series of stories which flesh out the story of the Zygons.

What am I left thinking?

• What is the Zygon plan, are they after a classic take over the earth plan or are they after something different?
• Who else might turn up in this series? Any more Doctors? Companions? Other villains.

Memorable bits

• A beaten Zygon changing shape to please the wife beater!
• The second doctor in a spy story…brilliant idea!
