Context: not much to add here, other than I am always happy to return to the Chibnall era and the 13th Doctor, who the more I listen to, the more I enjoy this quirky, funny, full of heart incarnation of my favourite Time Lord.
THE REVIEW
What I thought: I wasn’t sure at first about this one, in the sense that I was not entirely sure what was going on, with lots of jumps to different perspectives and parts of this conflict (which rather baffled me, to be honest). This isn’t so much an issue with the story, more the way I am listening to these stories, sometimes it’s difficult to be fully focused on them at times, especially if lots is going on from my personal life (which there is, too much).
That aside, as the story progressed, I began to really enjoy the dynamics between Yaz, Doctor, Prospero, Johnson, Miller, etc., with the team coming together at the end in order to defeat what is essentially the neo-liberal capitalist consensus made flesh in a jar! A FANTASTIC villain in my opinion and one which elevates this story considerably. Extremely thought-provoking (and very politically to the left, which I am firmly and proudly part of). Another good addition to this burgeoning range of 13th Doctor adventures.
Rating: 4 out of 5 hedge fund managers: I was edging toward a 3 but the conclusion elevates this story from good to very good, what a fantastic critique of modern capitalism and its excess, dangers and madness, beautifully foiled by the perfect incarnation to beat such rampant excess with compassion, wit and heart. Loved this one.
What am I left thinking/feeling/wanting?
- Obvs one but all this Tourist buisness, what the devil is going on?!?!?
Memorable bits
- The tourist at the end (assuming that is who it is at the end?!?)
- Nice stuff between Yaz and Megan, and what this means for Yaz and the Doctor’s relationship
- The tank was good fun!
