THE REVIEW
What I thought
The frequency sets a great pace and tone for the rest of this boxset, with an American ex special forces due trying to sell his ‘frequency’ to the UNIT team as the future of warfare. It’s an interesting idea and one which is revisted in the final story of the rest. But, this story is good fun, with the team now fully ‘gelled’ and playing lovely off each other. The team are rapidly become a UNIT powerhouse, very 90’s yet very similar in some respects to the classic 70’s UNIT squad. Be good to get a few more members on the payroll though! Anyway, this story clips along at a lovely pace, and there is plenty of action for all the team. Great stuff and a satisfying conclusion as creepy American dude gets his just deserts.
Haunt is a lovely ghost story, crazy with the whole notion of baghead (not sure I can tell you exactly what it is even after listening to this one, a shape changing/emotional sucking type alien I think) but we get some great stuff, between and from Ricks and Bambara in particular. The fact baghead is both psychic (sort of) and takes the form of his last victim is very creepy and used to great affect in this episode, great stuff.
The last line of defence is a great episode, and brings together stuff that has been brewing from the last boxset and this one. The aliens have arrived and it’s up to Bambara and the team to resist. Made much more probleamtic as the baddies have enlisted some humans into their mist (SPOILERS) turns out Dame Lindia is an agent of the alien scum! A twist I didn’t see coming and one that is played with perfection. The whole cast shine in this one, Rix and Safrin have lots of their own stuff to do, as does Bambara in resisting the attempts by Dame Lidia to get her on side/justify her betrayal. Its a thrilling episode, with the initial suspicions set up for Colonel Hagen eclipsed by him becoming a badass special agent who ends up saving the day, great character, shame he sacrifices himself at the end (you never know though). Fantastic end to the boxset.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Jeeps: I am not sure how much love this series gets but this boxset for me is proof it should be loved by fans, in particular children of the late 1980’s, its a perfect unit TEAM, constratsing nicely to the old UNIT and yet still the same in some ways. Brilliant stories, nice stand alone story and arc based adventures as well in this set. Loved this one
What am I left thinking?
- Now the whole Dame Lidia Arc is resolved where do the team go next?
- Are we looking at more alien invasions for the future or home grown threats?
- Will we ever see more explicit main Who cross overs? I suspect not and I am down with that, this series is way strong enough to stand on its own.
Memorable bits
- Shame!
- Bag Head
- Dame Lindia is a bady!
- The interviews are also such fun, these guys clearly had a blast reciring these stories
