Context: ok, so this is a different chapter/area/hole I have over the last few years fallen in and out of in terms of my collecting of figures. It’s been a bit of a problem, in the sense spending way way too much money on a collection, so I have pretty much bought and sold two-ish collections over the last few years. So, despite the joy collecting plastic Who dollies has given me in the past at times it has edged toward something less positive. The question I asked myself was, is there a more balanced approach to this part of my Dr Who hobby/obsession?

I think the answer to that question is evolving and will continue to evolve, however, after selling a lot, but not quite all of collection no 2, I have decided to at least try to collect responsibly, more controlled, more balanced. So, not ‘need’ everything. Collect the things I like. Don’t need to collect random figures from stories I have no interest in. Figure variants are not essential, I don’t need to collect every single version of the fourth doctor, for example.

So, stepping back, the final collection (and one I intend to keep this time and enjoy) is stepping into collecting again with joy, control, and mindful enjoyment of the experience of collecting. Dr Who plastic dollies!

THE REVIEW

What I think about this set

I wasn’t sure originally when this set was announced with the likeness to Tegan, it looked a little off in the photographs, however, in hand she looks bloody great! A brilliant likeness of Ressurection of the Daleks era Tegan, a season I am now going to revisit due to this release. The clothing is very accurate to that episode, with great articulation and the paint application is fantastic. These vortex collection releases have upped the game significantly at Character, and for me, they are just as good as anything Hasbro can do for Doctor Who! And more specifically a companion from the 1980’s! It makes me very hopeful for other Vortex edition companions going forward.

The destroyed Dalek (I don’t have the original destroyed Dalek and special weapons Dalek pack), so this is a most welcome addition to the collection. A very welcome addition, the horrible green brain like Kaled in the destroyed top of the Dalek is marvellous, detailed and yucky, as it should be. I really like the way the paint work is scuffed, battle damaged (a little more of this would have improved an awesome figure even more).

The accessories are always welcome, love the Dalek trooper gun (which I will look forward to outfitting on my 5th Doctor) and the Movellan virus cannister, which makes me smile.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Dalek globe thingys: a lovely set, looks fantastic in the box (I am resisting keeping an inboxed version..probably) and I love the quality of the figure of Teegan, the half destroyed Dalek, the wonderful accessories. There is maybe a little unlikeliness around Teegan from certain angles, but I am being picky; this is a great set!
