THE REVIEW
What I thought:
3.1 Propaganda by Georgia Cook -Rebellion brews on gallifrey, symbolised by a series of rebel broadcasts which really get on Rassilons wick. In steps Ollistra, sending out Leela, Cresta and the general to deal with them. Here ensues a kind of horror episode with the ‘signal disruptor’ toying with the team in a trap laden house, all very horror film, which makes for a great episode. We also see Rassilon getting more mental and Ollistra cementing her control of the war room. Its a great episode, and start to this boxset.
3.2 Resistance by Katharine Armitage – a punchy high octane episode, with the return of Eris, now in a new body, Narvin and the resistance. We start this one with a defection from Veklin (not my fav Gallifrey character I admit, she is due a regeneration I think/hope but I doubt it) and joining our band of resistance warriors. Some nice insights here into the lengths people will go to to protect their loved ones, and when this perhaps goes too far. The ‘is she’is she not’ really with the resistance for Veklin’s character is fun, as is the focus on Eris and how lost he is (using Rassilons deception field tech to try to keep the resistance safe). All goes pear shaped of course and we end up seeing the end of Eris, and it certainly seems that Veklin was a double agent. Great stuff with Narvin here, really struggling to let go of his in a coma and probably dead cousin. Great stuff, love this episode, especially that ending!
3.3 Hope by Fio Trethewey – in this episode we have a focus on Rasmus and Leela, entering the matrix, on a mission to find Romana, following up on the message recieved at the end of the last episode. This is an interetsing episode, with our heroes on seperate but connected missions. Leela trying to find Romana and Rasmus looking for ‘dirt’ on Ollistra. The cloister wraiths make a re-appearnce here, great creepy monsters, and some lovely stuff at the start of the episode with Rassilon playing Chess with Rasmus. Leela does find romanna and break her out of her cell only to have Ollistra back and on great villan-form. Turns out its not really Rommana, rather a ploy by Ollistra to create a real body for herself, so she can travel away from Gallifrey. Rasmus works it out, but our heroes are pretty trapped/stuffed by the end of the episode. A great cliffhanger to end on
Rating: 4 out of 5 political moves – very strong three episodes this I feel, strong perfoamnces from all and some brilliant double/ triple bluffs; as well as the return of Eris and Narvin, easy on teh Daleks but heavy on the mad Gallifrean schemes.
What am I left thinking?
- Will we ever see the real Romana again?
- Ollistra, the uber villian of the piece
Memorable bits
- Chess with Rassilon
- When will we discover what Rassilons plan really is…there clearly is one
- Veklin turning back toward the resistance at the end of the final episode
