Context: as I have been prioritising UNIT boxsets for every other BF listen a backlog of Doctor lead boxsets is building up, so this is the next one in line, 6th Doctor with Peri and Turlough. I enjoyed ‘Expulsion’ so looking forward to seeing where we go next with this new/old TARDIS team.

THE REVIEW

What I thought:

1. Save the Date by Matthew Sweet – I have to admit I wasn’t that keen on this one. There is some lovely stuff in here, in particular Colin really exploring/getting into the emotionally aware and intelligent side of Doctor number 6, as well as the great Annette Badland but the finale/second half of this had me baffled…no idea what happened at the end to to be honest? Something about aliens being transferred between the team/guests of the week…..still enjoyed it though. Especially the notion of the fake dating agency and the Doctor and Turlough going out on a double date. Lovely scenes here and Colin B is fantastic as the 6th Doctor in these scenes.

2. Poison’s Reach by Paul Sutton – ok, so change of pace for this one and to space, with a planet plagued by a politically toxic (literally in this case) family and a dodgy past, odd robots and a very angry scientist. Again I am not sure I completly followed this one but did so more so than the first episode. We have a dodgy politician type dude, Priss (what an odd name), who is hunting/at odds with Sandra ‘Baby’ Aureliano Silva, a scientist with an aim that is not entierly clear at the start of the episode. To me this is mostly Turlough’s episode, and at the conclusion he comes to the realisation that it is time for him to return home! Some good alien action here and there, murderous robots, nasty politicians (very clear parellels to the ornage turd currently residing in the whitehouse). I liked the politics of this episode.

3. Broken Home by AK Benedict and Guy Adams – So, we return to Trion (Turlough’s homeworld), the inevitable conclusion to the return of the red haired scamp. This starts with Turlough seeming to go full bad/turncoat again, but I wasn’t convinced as he seems to be fully onboard the TARDIS in this and the previous boxset. The story does a decent job of making this ambiguous enough to be somewhat doubtful (not really though). We have the murderous Avokan conquerors, decent villan, and Turlough trying to use TARDIS and Durgar (grey dwarf like beings encountered in the previous boxset) tech to make his fellow Trions accept their slavery. Interesting idea, all sorts of moral questions this brings up are played with nicely in this story. It is a decent episode, lots of good stuff for Turlough, with some excellent interactions with Peri in particular. The finale is cool, with a plan that implements the Doctrs personality in the Trions at first (doesn’t go to plan) then Peri into the Avokan leader, which makes them realise what shitbags they are (I paraphrase). Great ending, all good and a strong finale to these two 6th Doctor and Turlough boxsets.

Rating: 3.8 out of 5 Gingers: Decent box set, the finale story being the highlight for me, not so sure about the first story but overall a satisfying conclusion to this mini-return of Turlough to the TARDIS.

What am I left thinking?

  • Will we see Turlough again any time soon?
  • Always love a 6th Doc boxset, I have come to realise this is the incarnation I am most like personally!
  • Very much a fan of these boxsets where we get a returning companion, older, with a chance to return and finish their stories, hope we get same for other old school companions..i.e. Nyssa and older Tegan

Memorable bits

  • Trion
  • The Doctor with a girlfriend
  • The image of the Doctor and Peri running around with a decapitated Robot head
