Context: love the 9th Doctor, and love the bi-monthly releases of these adventures, so good and as ever I look forward to seeing what is going on with this one….I was intrigued by the hook of historical figures coming to the modern day Powell estate.

THE REVIEW

What I thought: another strong adventure here. With the 9th Doctor and Rose quickly immersed in an adventure where historical figures with a connection with this area of London start returning, and bunking up in the flats! We have Celtic warriors, Samuel Peeps (great fun characterisation here) and suffragettes, as well as Jackie and the gang trying to sort the mess out. At the heart of the story is the love story between an old friend of Jackie’s and his long lost love (hints of the 1980’s here in this story), and returning to themes of loss and grief with the inevitable hope that Pete will return. This is handled really well and makes for an affecting story. I know folks have started being a bit critical of the Powell estate context of this run of 9th Doctor stories, but I like them, there is plenty of time to rush around space, and this grounding has made for some great performances from Chris E and Billy P.

Rating: 4 out of 5: strong episode again, great performances by all, the notion of returning historical figures is a fun one and handled well in this story, recommend this one.

What am I left thinking?

  • There clearly is something bigger behind the shenanigans on the estate, but who, what when etc remains a mystery; I look forward to finding out what is going on in future episodes.

Memorable bits

  • Every moment with Jackie in!
