Context: It feels a like long time ago since listening to the last boxset but I remember that one pretty well, and did enjoy this somewhat different BF boxset, onward for the second one!

THE REVIEW

What I thought

2.1 The Hunt by Jonathan S Powell – So back to this very creepy set up, with the young escapees from boxset one, Tiro and Letty, press-ganged to return to Sunlight to bring home an active pod for the creep, neoliberal nightmare that is Kemi-vox, which is all very Alien (with accompanying space marines), very Aliens in fact. The horror here is the corporate greed, as well as horrific Krynoid deaths, and we spend lots of time with Tiro and Letty, seeing how the events of the previous boxset have changed them (nice cameo from Reece Shearsmith here). We also have the bounty hunter and his cyborg Sabre, great characters. The odious CEO gets her cummupence here as well, or seems to anyway. Great stuff for an opening episode.

2.2 The Harrow by Georgia Cook – so, this one is a base under siege set-up, with the 8th Doctor and Liv turning up in the way of a marauding Kyrnoid. It is the same setting as Alien, again I would say, with the team trying to uncover the fate of the colony, coming into contact with the Kynoid pods and coming a cropper because of this, brutal deaths and the voice of the Krynoid through the doctor and other walking corpses, all great. The 8th and Liv have some great scenes at the end, the 8th Doctor not being able to really change the fate of anyone. Brutal.

2.3 The Harvest by Jonathan Morris – The finale of the boxset (and maybe this monster sub- series, hopefully not!) which brings our family back together. This time we are focused on our survivors, Dad and Mum of Tiro at a lost colony, Sunlight, which has suspiciously high walls and particularly lush plants and veg! I wonder what is going on there… Throw in a weird cult going on about Father Nature and we have almost a wicker man set up here….of course, obvious spoiler, we have a massive Krynoid at the heart of this one. It is under the ice, being fed by the cult over a century, fed by bloated, overfed, drugged-up humans. Some great body horror here, horrific. We get a return of our young heroes from episode 1 by the end of this episode on their stolen ship, which is handy as the whole colony is falling apart, with the massive Krynoid attempting to bring down the shuttle. It’s great, with poor old Dad sacrificing himself so they can all get away. But….is the Krynoid really gone?!?!? Lovely final episode.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 seed pods: another strong entry in this slightly different Who universe adventures, with lots of horror, great characters and lovely closure for some of the survivors, kinda. Not sure we really needed the 8th Doctor in here, but enjoyed that episode nonetheless and great to hear from Liv as well.
